Sakshi Bhardwaj is an art director based in Delhi with an avid interest in doodling and illustration. Her artwork is inspired by her surroundings, with everything, big or small finding its way into her vision.
We recently got in touch with Sakshi, an artist currently based in Delhi. She shares her motivations and ambitions in this very delightful interview.
We’re glad we could finally get to this chat, welcome-Sakshi! Tell us a bit about yourself.
First off, thanks for considering me for this interview. I sincerely appreciate it.
Hi! I am Sakshi, an art director, an Illustrator and doodler. I am the possessive type, too shy, too sarcastic, but yes hopelessly romantic and a believer in KARMA. I love singing and writing. I was born in Jodhpur (Rajasthan) brought up in Faridabad (Haryana).
Did my Graduation from MAAC (INDORE).
I work as an art director in an agency based in Delhi. Previously, I worked in Pune as a Graphic designer. I love exploring new things and travelling.
I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it if my parents and everyone around me weren’t so supportive and motivating. I have some amazing friends who are actually more like a family, I Love them.
How did you realize that art was an essential element of your perspective?
I didn’t realized it actually, my mom did. I know it’s funny but yes. One day she came to me and suggested this animation course. I was always good with colors and drawing. I used to doodle, make art and draw. Her suggestion paid off and I did the course, trying harder each day to do something great.
Are there any particular themes you like to explore in your work?
I really want to explore the geometrical art, how it is done and everything about it. I want explore doodles and paintings. I sometimes wonder how can be people so good with watercolors, because I have tried many times and I found it very tough.
Who would you say has been your biggest inspiration?
Everyone inspires me in some way or the other. My mother inspires me at every step of my life. She is the strongest and most determined lady I know and I would be blessed if I could become even 1% like her. The strength my daddy carries, his patience and hardwork is the only reason I am here today. I am so proud of him and my Mom. She is love.
Talk us through your creative process. How long does it take you from ideation to the finished product?
It takes a lot of time actually, in ideation. But then I become super impatient and make some rough scribble. I generally use a reference image to get the basic shape of the subject. Once done, I do away with the reference image. I then proceed to fill it with geometric shapes and colour. I keep doodling in my daily diary. But the detailed ones, I do them on weekends.
We are eager to learn about the tools you use. Could you give us a quick preview of your inventory?
I use photoshop, Illustrator, wacom and my pen and pencil. I have one diary in which I doodle every day.
Would you mind letting us have a peek at your work station?
Do you remember the first thing you ever drew?
No, I don’t remember but I must have drawn that lady with a pot in her hand going somewhere in the city with the rising sun. lol.
Is there anything you wish to change about yourself as an artist?
Yes, I want to be more patient, I don’t have patience and really need it. Because it requires a lot of time and stability. I get bored very easily, I cannot stick to a particular thing for too long so yes I need to be more patient and I know it.
If were to choose from all your work till date, what would you pick as your most favourite artwork?
I love all of them, because they all have some sort of connection with me. They all are part of what is going inside there in my head at some point of time.
Procrastination- how would you define your relationship with it? And how do you deal with it?
Well, very nice question. I do get lost sometimes when I am doodling, as it’s like meditation when I draw. I do not realize the time. But, I would say I never leave a thing for last minute. If I have a project which can be completed in a day and I have 3 days for it, I prefer to finish it off in the first day itself for my own peace of mind. Because I am so impatient that I don’t like things on my platter.
What is the one thing that keeps you going?
The fact that we’re living in an era perfectly conducive for explorations in digital and mixed media art is a very exciting thought for me – someone who has been chronically obsessed with digital art ever since she got her hands on Photoshop. I wanted to prove myself, my goals because when I started I was not sure if I could do this. But I am still trying to be there where I always wanted to be.
Does music play an important part in your creative process? Could we get a peek at the top songs on your playlist right now?
When I am working I prefer not to listen to music, because I prefer to dance. I start singing and the dancing follows. I think you can focus only when you have silence around.
If given a chance to work with any artist in the world, who would you pick?
Kerby Rosans, I guess he is finest artist I have ever seen.
If you weren’t an artist, what do think you would be doing?
I would probably be doing something in Kitchen..LOL
If you could have only one superpower, what would you choose?
I want to learn every type of art, and because I am highly possessive by nature I need a power that I don’t have to share with others.
If you could give one piece of advice for aspiring artists reading this right now, what would that be?
Love everything you do. Feel everything you do, because when you are satisfied, it doesn’t matter what others say. You live for yourself. Stay motivated and keep moving.
